Nigra Trail

The Nigra Trail is not an easy route along park footbridges, but rather a true treat for devoted nature lovers. Wild landscapes and untamed nature surround you, while the trail greets hikers with slippery mud in places and offers no promises of clean shoes. At times, you will need to step over fallen trees or climb onto rocks. Throughout its length, the trail follows the River Nigra, unfolding a sequence of steep riverbanks, descents, ravines, streams, and countless twists and turns. Along the way, hikers encounter the Guardian of the Nigra, the Twin Oaks, rapids, wood anemones, a sulphur spring, several landslides, the Kāļi Oak, also known as “five centimetres short of a venerable tree”, and other beautiful features.

About the trail:

  • The trail is circular, approx. 7 km long (though it often feels longer).
  • Difficulty level: high – expect ascents and descents, narrow footbridges, mud, and other challenges.
  • Starting point: bridge over the River Nigra near the homestead “Janēti”. Coordinates: 57.408183, 25.771909.
  • Several fire pits are set up along the riverbank (and possibly even in the river). There are no tables or benches; you can sit on a stump, a log, a rock, or moss.
  • Along the entire route, trees are periodically marked with red stripes on a white background to confirm you are on the correct trail.

Please respect forest landowners and the work invested in creating the trail, and help keep it clean and well-maintained!
