Rauna cemetery
Rauna Cemetery, with its slightly mystical and mysterious atmosphere, is attracting an increasing number of cemetery tourism enthusiasts. This cemetery is definitely one of the most unusual tourist attractions in the Rauna area.
About Rauna Cemetery
- Rauna Cemetery was consecrated on 29 June 1773, during the tenure of pastor Michael Wurm. Before that, the cemetery was situated near Rauna Church.
- Land plots for the needs of the cemetery were gifted by the owner of Rauna Castle Manor – Count Grigory Orlov (1734–1783).
- Several notable people have been buried at Rauna Cemetery, and a large number of artistically valuable gravestones and metal crosses can be found there.
- The oldest grave cross found in the cemetery, featuring flat floral decorations at its ends, was erected for those who died between 1825 and 1834.
- Several other artificially valuable forged metal objects can be found at the cemetery, including three large crosses measuring 2–3 metres in height, 118 cast iron crosses, 14 cast iron benches, 5 cast iron chain fences with lace patterns, 7 cast iron chain fences, and others.
- 2000. In 2000, a monument for the victims of the Red Terror was installed at Rauna Cemetery.
