The Latvian Autocross Championship will take place at the Teperis track in Smiltene
This weekend, on 23 and 24 August, the fifth round of the Latvian Autocross Championship and Cup will take place at the Teperis autocross track in Smiltene, alongside the fifth round of the Estonian Autocross Championship in the B6000, D12 and D13 classes. The event will bring together 120 participants.
This will be the penultimate round of the season and could prove decisive in the battle for valuable championship points. The Teperis track is known for its varied terrain and packed spectator stands, which have created a special atmosphere for many years.
Historically, the Teperis round in Smiltene has attracted a large number of participants from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. This year, a total of 120 entries are expected across four touring car classes and seven buggy classes, including, for the first time this season, the D12 and D13 classes, as well as the spectacular B6000 class, known as the “Crocodiles”.
The Teperis track in Smiltene is the only venue where, as part of the event, the Estonian Championship is held for the GAZ-52 and GAZ-53 truck classes.
Jānis Kozlovskis, a representative of AX Latvia, explains: “These are true relics of the Soviet era that have survived to the present day and continue to delight spectators. The Smiltene round is the biggest celebration for GAZ vehicles, almost like a festival where you can see all the machines that are still ‘alive’.
This year, however, the B6000 class has been a slight disappointment. Usually, 12–14 vehicles compete in this class, but this time there will be only seven. It is a small sign that this historic part of the sport is gradually becoming a thing of the past. Nevertheless, it is always a special pleasure to be in Smiltene, as this round stands out for its large number of spectators, creating a truly festive atmosphere.”
The Teperis track is a special venue – its hilly terrain, long-standing traditions and strong spectator support make the Smiltene round one of the most eagerly anticipated motorsport events in Latvia.
Vairis Tralla, organiser of the Smiltene round, explains: “This year, we are celebrating 31 years of autocross in Smiltene, highlighting the track’s important place in the history of Latvian motorsport. We look forward to welcoming all drivers and fans this weekend and creating a true autocross festival together.”
The Smiltene round is the penultimate event of the season before the final races at the “Mūsa Raceland” track in Bauska, meaning that the points scored at the Teperis track will have a significant impact on the overall championship standings. Competition is particularly close this year in the buggy classes and the 1600 touring car class, where the gaps between the overall leaders are minimal.
