On Monday, 21 September 2026, Smiltene Municipality hosted a working visit by representatives of Võru Rural Municipality (Võru vald in Estonian), including Mayor Raul Tohv, representatives of the tourism sector and cultural heritage sites, as well as local entrepreneurs. The main purpose of the visit was to strengthen neighbourly relations, promote the exchange of information between the municipalities, and discuss joint initiatives for the development of the tourism sector.

During the first part of the day, the guests were welcomed by Ervins Labanovskis, Chairman of the Smiltene Municipality Council, Astrīda Harju, Deputy Chairwoman, as well as specialists in tourism, culture, development, and communication. During the meeting, the parties discussed opportunities for cooperation between the municipalities and the exchange of information in the field of tourism.

The visit continued in Blome and Branti parishes, where the guests learned about the history of the guest house “Lielkalnu muiža”, as well as the story behind the renovation of the building, the expansion of the property, and the development of its tourism offer. At Branti Manor, the delegation enjoyed a traditional Latvian-style lunch and heard the story of the building’s revival, where a warm, homely atmosphere and authentic Latvian flavours are being created.
The guests also had an opportunity to learn about the establishment of a sauna school, where sauna masters from various countries acquire their professional knowledge and skills. At the end of the visit, the representatives of the neighbouring country visited the “Birzī” tree sap production facility, where they learned about the diversity of its products, as well as the challenges and experience involved in selling and exporting them abroad.

Representatives of both municipalities and the tourism sector positively assessed the meeting, highlighting the importance of cooperation, networking, and the exchange of experience. At a time when the region is experiencing a decline in tourist flows, closer cooperation and knowledge-sharing are particularly important for supporting the continued development of the tourism sector.
