Smiltene Municipality Tourisma Information Centre joins “Hiker-friendly” network

We are pleased to announce that this spring the “Hiker-Friendly” network has also been joined by the Smiltene Municipality Tourism Information Centre, located at 3 Dārza Street, Smiltene. It is accessible to people with mobility impairments and confirms that the municipality is becoming increasingly welcoming to different groups of travellers, while continuing to develop a high-quality and accessible tourism offer.

The initiative “Gājējam draudzīgs / Hiker-Friendly” continues to grow across the Baltic States, making hiking more convenient and accessible for everyone who enjoys nature. In Latvia, too, an increasing number of tourism service providers are joining this network, offering hikers the support they need along the way — from practical amenities to a warm and welcoming reception.

Smiltene Municipality, where hiking trails lead through diverse landscapes, forests, hills, and cultural and historical sites, is also an ideal place for leisurely exploring nature. To make this experience even more enjoyable, an important role is played by stopping points where visitors can regain their strength and prepare for the journey ahead.

Places marked with the “Hiker-Friendly” label are specially adapted for people who are on the move. There, visitors can refill their drinking water, charge mobile devices, obtain information about the surrounding area and routes, as well as have a meal or enjoy a coffee break. Accommodation providers often also offer facilities for drying clothes, footwear, and equipment, which is especially important on multi-day hikes. Tourism information centres may also qualify for this label if they are particularly welcoming to walkers and promote hiking through their information channels.

At present, there are already more than 500 “Hiker-Friendly” places across the Baltics, forming a unified support network for hiking enthusiasts and promoting the development of sustainable tourism. When planning your next hike, these places are well worth including in your route.
