Bog Trail in Smiltene
The story behind the Bog Trail is quite unusual – a man who lived near the bog gradually built the trail himself over the course of his life, creating a quicker and more convenient route to Drandu Street and further on to the town centre. The trail runs straight through the bog, offering particularly scenic views. In early summer, fragrant marsh rosemary blooms here; later in the season, locals come to the bog to forage for mushrooms.
- The Bog Trail connects two streets of Smiltene – Drandu Street and Ceriņu Street.
- Trail length: 600 m (one way).
- A walk along the Bog Trail can be combined with a visit to the Ornamental Garden of the Guest House “Oāze”, located nearby. Just 400 m further on is Jakob Lange’s resting place, where an information board explains his contribution to the history of Smiltene and Latvia. Together, these stops form a circular route of approx. 2.5 km.
- The route can also be completed (with minor challenges) by bicycle, with a stroller, or using other non-motorised means of transport.
