Cycling Route “Cycle Around Smiltene’s Lakes”

“Cycle Around Smiltene’s Lakes” is a 30 km circular cycling route of moderate difficulty. It mostly follows gravel and forest roads, with a smaller section on asphalt.

  • This is a local cycling route, and the Vidzeme Tourism Association (upon application by the Smiltene Tourism Information Centre) has assigned it route number 115.
  • For a short section, the route overlaps with the national cycling route “Tour de Lat Est” (route number 6). In the Smiltene area, it also crosses or overlaps in places with one of the three Smiltene cycling trails of varying length and difficulty, created thanks to the contribution of Latvia’s State Forests.
  • The route lets you enjoy the area’s characteristic terrain and beautiful landscapes, relax at 7 forest lakes, and discover natural and cultural heritage.
  • The route passes multiple attractions – Smiltene Evangelical Lutheran Church, the historic Kalnamuiža complex, Lake Niedrājs and its surroundings, Lake Salainis (shaped like the outline of Latvia), Pārkalni Money Stone, Silva Dendrological Park, Cērtene Hillfort, and many smaller natural sites.

The route navigation (GPX) file is available here.

Trail Marking

Follow the on-site markings: blue signs with route number 115 and direction arrows (placed before turns). Orange horizontal stripes on a white background are also regularly painted on trees. Typically, after each turn, you should see this marking further ahead.

Information boards at natural and cultural sites provide details about the attraction and your current location.
