Dzenīši Great Willow
The Dzenīši Great Willow is located in a meadow near the Ape Motocross Track.
For more than 100 years, it has stood proudly on the banks of the River Vaidava, delighting the residents and visitors of Ape; however, in the harsh weather of recent years, the Dzenīši Great Willow has been seriously damaged – so we invite you to visit and admire it while it is still green!
- It is the thickest white willow (Salix alba) in Latvia and the Baltic states.
- The willow grows in a meadow by an old meander of the River Vaidava, beautifully standing out in the landscape.
- The trunk circumference at 0.5 m above ground has already reached 10 metres, and the height is 21 metres.
- At a height of three metres, the trunk splits into more than 20 branches.
- A large hollow has rotted out inside the tree, causing the willow to start collapsing.
- It is more than 100 years old and was planted around 1880 by Blūms, the owner of Blumcikuži Farmstead, to mark the boundary of his land.
The willow can be viewed from a distance from the Ape motocross track, and it can also be seen from the Vaidava nature trail, located on the opposite bank of the River Vaidava.
