The railway section Alūksne – Ape was once part of the Valga/Valka-Gulbene narrow-gauge railway line, which began operating in 1903.

• Length of the Green Railway route: 28 km.
• The former railway line is well-suited for hiking: it is winding, visually engaging, and its varied landscapes give it a special charm.
• Ceļā iespējamas vairākas izaicinošas vietas, bet līdzsvars starp nedaudz mežonīgu vidi, kā arī ērti ejamām takām, dod maršrutam papildu vērtību.
• An exciting hike is guaranteed.
• The route is not easy to cycle, but it will be truly exciting for real adventure seekers!

Please note that this section is not an official Green Railways hiking route, and it is not maintained on a regular basis, although plans for improvement exist. Currently, route markings can only be found in Alūksne, Ape, and at some former station sites.
