Green Railway Ape – Valka/Valga
The narrow-gauge railway between Valka and Ape was opened in 1900 and operated until 1970. After the establishment of the Republics of Estonia and Latvia in 1918, and the division of Valka and Valga between the two countries, a new branch line was built parallel to the existing railway – from Valga to Ape on the territory of Estonia. The two lines meet near Koikküla, located about 13 km from Valga.
Today, the former railway route – passing through scenic countryside and small towns in southern Estonia and northern Vidzeme – has been transformed into a hiking and cycling route.
- Route: Ape – Kalliküla – Hargla – Taheva – Korkuna – Laanemetsa – Koikküla – Žuldiņas – Valka/Valga.
- Route length: 55 km.
- The route mainly follows gravel and forest roads.
- From Valka to Žuldiņas and from Koikküla to Hargla, where the former railway route can no longer be used, the route continues along public roads.
- The route is marked in nature, and visitors can explore historical materials along the way.
