Green Railway Smiltene – Valmiera – Ainaži
The regional cycling route No. 14 connects Smiltene with Ainaži. The route follows the historic narrow-gauge railway line “Smiltene – Ainaži”, leading through fields and forests and across specially built bridges over small rivers. In some sections, the route continues along asphalt or gravel roads that serve as connecting segments. From Biksēja to Valmiera, the route is diverted away from the old railway, as riding along the historic railway corridor is no longer possible there.
- Total length of the Smiltene – Valmiera – Ainaži route: 128 km.
- Route Smiltene – Trikāta – Brenguļi – Valmiera: 30 km.
- Information boards are installed along the route, introducing the history of the railway and nearby points of interest.
- The GPX file for the Green Railways cycling route Smiltene – Valmiera – Ainaži is available here.
- A cycling route map, sightseeing objects, contact information, and other useful details are available here.
The project “Green Railways” aims to restore and adapt former railway line infrastructure in Vidzeme and southern Estonia, creating a shared cycling and hiking network of approximately 750 km, most of which follows former railway lines.
Trail Marking
Green Railway sections and their connections are marked in nature. In Valmiera, blue Green Railway cycling signs are used. In other areas, the route can be followed using cycling direction signs marked with route number 14.
