Grundzāle Nature Trail

A nature trail begins at the Grundzāle open-air stage area and winds along the picturesque River Vecpalsa. The route is easy to walk and suitable for most pedestrians, though along the way, you will need to cross several small bridges, climb stairs, and be prepared for possible mud in wetter weather.

The most impressive time to visit is in spring, when the trees have not yet sprouted and wide views open up to the dolomite outcrops along the riverbanks, the water-rich bends of the River Vecpalsa, and the roaring rapids. However, even later – in the blooming spring, warm summer, or colourful autumn – the place does not lose its appeal. The air is filled with the scent of bird cherry blossoms and dandelions, later replaced by the richness of autumn colours. As the river recedes, dolomite layers and various stones become visible, which remain underwater during the wetter months.

Although the trail along the River Vecpalsa does not form a circle, reaching the end of the trail at a bridge approximately 1 kilometre from the start, there are three possible routes for the return trip:

  1. Back along the same trail. Walking in the opposite direction, the landscape looks different, and it feels as if you are taking a completely different route.
  2. To the right – across the bridge. After crossing, the route continues along a gravel road to the A2 highway. Then, you must walk a short distance along the edge of the A2 to the right turn onto Tilta Street. Please note that there is no pedestrian pavement along the A2 at this stage, so be especially cautious! Walking along Tilta Street, you can see Grundzāle Primary School and the cultural centre.
  3. To the left – towards Palsas Street. his is the simplest and most convenient way back, leading along a straight, asphalt street through a residential area to the bridge over the River Vecpalsa, by the Grundzāle open-air stage – the spot where the nature trail begins.

Note:

  • The trail uses markings: a red stripe on a white background (see images in the gallery).
  • The trail is suitable for walking all year round; however, during spring floods, some parts of the trail may be flooded.
  • The trail is not suitable for strollers, bicycles, scooters, or other wheeled vehicles.
  • A walk on this trail can be combined with the Tilderi, Randati, and Vizla nature trails in Vireši Rural Territory.
  • Nearby is the store “TOP” (15 Avotu Street, by the A2), offering groceries, freshly baked pastries, and household goods, including mosquito repellent and other insect protection products.
  • The nearest café is “Pie Annas” (in Vireši). Opening hours are available here.
