Jāzeps Vītols Memorial Museum “Anniņas” and Park
The museum introduces visitors to the life and work of Jāzeps Vītols (1863–1948), founder and rector of the Latvian Conservatoire. “Gaujiena – my paradise…” said the distinguished composer when, in recognition of his achievements, the Latvian state granted him part of the former Gaujiena Manor Park. From the minutes of the Valka District Land Committee meeting of 28 November 1922:
“…when determining the boundaries, consideration should be given to ensure that the plot includes as much natural beauty as possible, since the land allocated by the central committee is intended primarily as a place of rest for Professor J. Vītols, whose occupation is not agriculture.”
The former two-storey wooden brewer’s house of Gaujiena Manor and approximately 20 hectares of natural beauty thus became the place where Jāzeps Vītols spent every holiday, until he was forced to leave Latvia in October 1944.
