Kalamecu – Markuzu Ravines
Kalamecu – Markuzu Ravines are located 6 km from Gaujiena, in the direction of Estonia.
- Kalamecu – Markuzu Ravines are nationally protected geological monuments. The natural monument was established to preserve a unique geological and geomorphological formation – canyon-like ravines formed in dolomite and Quaternary sediments, classified as ravines.
- The canyon-like ravines feature small waterfalls and dolomite outcrops, offering a true sense of adventure.
- Kalamecu Ravine is 240 m long, about 10 m wide, and up to 12 m deep. Kalamecu Stream flows through the ravine (after the ravine, it joins another river and becomes the River Poļaka), where seven waterfalls have formed in its bed.
- Markuzu Ravine is 250 m long, 14–25 m wide, and up to 13 m deep.
- The ravines are most impressive during spring floods or after heavy rain.
Important!
- Dolomite overhangs with crumbling dolomite pieces have formed on the slopes of the ravines. Be careful when observing the ravines!
- The ravines are located on private property – respect land ownership!
- Access to the ravines may be difficult in wet conditions, as the road gets muddy.
