Kalnamuiža (Smiltene Manor) Complex and Teutonic Order Castle Ruins

The Smiltene Manor complex is located on the steep bank of Lake Vidusezers. This area is known as Kalnamuiža.

  • The manor buildings were constructed between 1767–1771. At that time, the owner of the manor was George Browne, Governor General of Vidzeme, but later, the manor was sold to Bandavs, a merchant from Riga. In 1893, Lieven’s mother purchased the manor as a gift for her son, Paul Lieven. This period marked the beginning of Paul Lieven’s reign, during which Smiltene developed rapidly.
  • Preserved buildings of Kalnamuiža include the manor manager’s house, ice cellar, hunter’s lodge, stables, silage tower, barn with historic weather vanes, and the ruins of the Teutonic Order castle with the former cheese factory (1763).
  • 1922. In 1922, the Latvian state nationalised the manor and established an agricultural training exhibition. Today, the manor’s buildings house Smiltene Technical School, where young people from all over Latvia come to study.
