Mikuži Meeting House

The Mikuži Meeting House is located in Trapene, on the banks of the Melnupe River. Services of the Gaujiena Evangelical Lutheran congregation are still held in the building.

About the Meeting House

  • The log building was constructed by Latvian farmers in 1803, with renovations carried out in 1872 .
  • After the decline of the Moravian Brethren movement in the mid-19th century, “Mikuži” began to be used as a church prayer house.
  • The building has 11 windows, original doors, and lanterns that are more than 100 years old. On the raised platform there is a pulpit, long wooden benches for worshippers, a harmonium, and two altar paintings.
  • To improve acoustics, the ceiling curves downward at the sides, merging with the walls.
  • Not far from the building, right on the bank of the Melnupīte River, there is a small healing spring.
