Pārkalnes Money Stone

The Pārkalnes Money Stone (also known as the Golden Stone) is located in Launkalne Rural Territory, near the village of Zeltiņi.

  • Only the upper part of the stone is visible above ground, covering approximately 25 m². Its full volume is unknown, as it has never been excavated, but it may be one of the largest boulders in Latvia.
  • The stone is listed as a protected natural monument.
  • Treasure hunters have dug around the stone in hopes of finding hidden treasure.
  • A health spring dedicated to Ūsiņš once existed beside the path leading to the stone. Today, the spring has dried up, and only a concrete ring in the ground marks its former location.

The legend

“When the Swedes ruled Vidzeme and were forced to leave, money was brought to this stone by six oxen and buried beneath it. Once, a young man went to the stone to dig for the treasure. It was exactly midnight. He dug until sweat poured from his face, when suddenly he was struck hard on the back and fell straight into the pit. After a while, he awoke and climbed out, only to see a white billy goat with red eyes standing beside the pit. When the boy tried to dig again, the goat pulled back for another hit. Left with no other option, the young man went home. About twenty years later, another man went mushroom picking in the forest. He usually sat on the stone to rest and smoke his pipe. It was a beautiful summer morning. Coming home from the forest, the man approached the stone to light his pipe. There, he noticed something unexpected. Piles of sand lay near the stone, and a pit beside it. At the bottom of the pit, the imprint of a chest was clearly visible. Looking closer, the man saw cart tracks nearby. It was clear – the money had been taken away.”
