Randāti Nature Trail

Located on the right bank of the Gauja, near Vireši, are the Randāti Cliffs, which have been the highest dolomite cliffs in Latvia (26 meters) since the flooding of the Daugava Valley. A nature trail has been established around them with signs and information boards where you can read about the local natural treasures.

  • Trail length: 1.2 km
  • Old dolomite quarries are located in the northern part of the cliffs.
  • During the driest months of the year, it is possible to wade across the River Gauja and connect the Randāti Nature Trail with the Tilderi Nature Trail.

About the Randāti Cliffs

  • The cliffs are a protected geological and geomorphological natural monument.
  • The protected area includes dolomite outcrops along the right bank of the River Gauja, the Randāti Cliffs, and Tilderi Cliff on the left bank.
  • The total length of the exposed Randāti and Tilderi cliffs on both riverbanks of the Gauja is approximately 550 metres.
  • The Randāti Cliffs are significantly higher and more picturesque.
  • Ongoing geological processes can be observed here, including dolomite rockfalls and, to a lesser extent, lateral river erosion.

Important!

  • During the spring floods, the trail may become flooded!
  • The trail is not suitable for bicycles or strollers.
  • The trail includes climbing steep wooden stairs.
  • Respect Latvia’s natural values and do not damage them!
