Red Cross Smiltene Hospital

Red Cross Smiltene Hospital was built in 1903 at the personal expense of Prince Paul Lieven, the owner of Smiltene Manor, and donated to the town. 20. After losing his son to an incurable illness, the prince decided to establish a hospital so that residents of Smiltene and the surrounding area could receive qualified medical care. He personally designed the building, supervised construction, and covered all expenses. Although the exact cost is unknown, it remains one of the largest gifts to Smiltene in the 20th century.

 

About the hospital

  • It was originally designed as a surgical hospital with modern equipment, 25 beds, and separate wards for men and women.
  • 1903. The hospital was officially opened on 14 September 1903.
  • After World War I and Latvia gaining independence, Smiltene Manor was nationalised, and the hospital came under the administration of the Red Cross.
  • A hospital park was developed alongside the building.
  • 2003. In 2003, a commemorative plaque honouring Prince Paul Lieven was unveiled on the hospital’s centenary.
  • Nowadays, the hospital houses a day hospital, an emergency unit, and social care and rehabilitation departments.
