Smiltene Cinema

The small cinema is located on the first floor of Smiltene Cultural Centre. It remains the only digital cinema in a small town of Latvia that can fully compete with cinemas in the larger cities.

The History of Cinema in Smiltene:

  • At the beginning of the 20th century, cinema in Smiltene began with occasional screenings in Ķelpīši barn, where people brought their own benches and chairs, while the projector rattled loudly at the back. This modest building was later destroyed by war.
  • A major step forward came in 1926, when the determined Smiltene resident, Anna Andrejeva, opened her own cinema “Atpūta”. This year is considered the birth of cinema in Smiltene. The building burnt down in 1944.
  • For a short time, films were shown in a building at 13 Baznīcas Square.
  • Later, the town authorities decided to renovate a burnt-down house on Gaujas Street (now the Sports School), which had belonged to the Smiltene Evangelical Lutheran Congregation. 1949. In 1949, it was fully rebuilt as a permanent cinema and named “Gaisma”. The cinema operated until autumn of 1963, when the cinema “Kosmoss” was opened in the newly built Cultural Centre and Cinema Complex. This marked the beginning of widescreen film screenings in Smiltene.
  • The cinema remains at this location today. 2011. In 2011, as part of the Cultural Centre renovation, the cinema was also modernised. Three years later, the Smiltene Municipality Council purchased state-of-the-art digital equipment, marking the start of a new era of cinema in Smiltene.
  • The cosy and comfortable 83-seat cinema continues to operate, offering audiences the latest films across a variety of genres.

    • Monday – Friday: 08:00–17:00;
    • Saturday, Sunday: 1 hour before the screening.
