Smiltene HPP
The story of the Smiltene Hydroelectric Power Plant began in 1901, thanks to Prince Paul von Lieven, when Smiltene Manor was supplied with electricity generated by a waterwheel with a generator installed in one of the manor buildings.
- 1. Smiltene HPP was located in the modern Old Park, on the site of today’s open-air stage. Water was supplied via canals and specially built bridges through the Old Park. The residents of Smiltene Manor, who were the first to see electric light, were so amazed that when the lights were switched on, they threw their hats into the air and shouted “hurrah!”.
- 1913. In 1913, the second HPP was built, with water supplied through the Lake Teperis Canal. 2. The HPP was located just before Lake Vidusezers, close to the park hotel “Brūzis”.
- This power plant only operated until midnight. It was only run longer on special occasions, such as anniversaries or important celebrations of wealthy townspeople, and only for an additional fee.
- The second power plant operated until 1961.
- Later, a second floor was added to the building, and it was converted into a residential house.
- Nowadays, a new private power plant, built in 1999, can be seen in the park, serving as a daily reminder of Lieven’s contribution and the electric lighting in Smiltene. The new HPP is located next to the former second HPP, which is now a residential building.
