Smiltene Stonehenge

A popular sightseeing spot in summer evenings, locally known as Smiltene Stonehenge, is formed by the ruins of a former Smiltene Manor barn.

  • The silhouette of the ruins resembles the famous archaeological monument in the United Kingdom.
  • Most likely, it is precisely this barn, once belonging to Prince Paul Lieven, that is closely linked to the beginnings of the Song Festival tradition in Smiltene. In August 1908, the Smiltene Music and Singing Society organised the first major Song Festival day in Smiltene and the surrounding area, with around 400 singers from nine local choirs from Valka, Trikāta, Jaunvāle, Plāņi, Aumeisteri, Palsmane, Mālava, Vijciems, and Grundzāle.
  • For several summers, cornflower fields have bloomed next to Stonehenge in early summer, followed by vibrant sunflower fields.
