Vizla Nature Trail

Vizla Nature Trail winds along the meanders of the River Vizla, taking visitors all the way to where it flows into the River Gauja.

  • The trail is one-way and stretches for 1.2 km.
  • Start: at the bridge over the River Vizla – the oldest dolomite arch bridge in Latvia, built in 1834.
  • The trail is located in the protected nature area “Ziemeļgauja” (North Gauja).
  • Information boards along the trail introduce several natural values of North Gauja.
  • During the walk, you can observe the rapid River Vizla, Vizla Dolomite Outcrops, Vizla (Žākļi) Giant Boulder, and reach the river’s confluence with the River Gauja.
  • Žākļi Giant Boulder dimensions: height 3.4 m, length 6 m, width 3.7 m, and circumference 15 m.
  • 1978. In 1978, fragments of the film “Pūt vējiņi” were shot along this stretch of the river.

 

Important!

  • The trail is one-way – you must return the same way.
  • During high waters, parts of the trail may be flooded.
  • Not suitable for bicycles or strollers.
  • Be careful near water. Look after yourself and your children!

 


Legends

Žākļi Giant Boulder is also known as Žākļi Devil’s Stone. It is believed that it got this name from a tale about the Devil, who is said to have fled into the stone while hiding from the wrath of Pērkons (the God of Thunder).
