Žagatu Cliffs
The Žagatu Cliffs are located on the left bank of the River Gauja, near Vireši. From a distance, they can be observed from the bridge over the Gauja, but the best way to view the cliffs is while boating on the river.
About the Žagatu Cliffs
- The natural monument consists of Devonian dolomite outcrops.
- The cliffs are large boulders that have been knocked down by the enormous forces of nature.
- The total length of the protected outcrop zone is 125 m.
- The height of the outcrops reaches approximately 5 m.
- Most likely, the River Daugava dolomites are exposed here. Other nearby outcrops belong to older geological layers of the Amata and Pļaviņas river formations.
