Zvārtava Windmill

Zvārtava Windmill is located within the Zvārtava Manor complex and is one of the museum buildings owned by the Latvian Artists’ Union Association. It is a state-protected cultural monument of national significance (No. 2768).

The mill was built in 1803 as an important part of the manor’s economic life. It is a Dutch-type windmill with a masonry structure, characterized by decorative red brick around the window and door openings.

In the mid-20th century, the mill was still in use. From 1951 to 1954, the collective farm “Straume” adapted it for operation by adding a portable steam engine. Later, the mill’s mechanisms were dismantled and its sails were removed.

Today, Zvārtava Windmill is well preserved. New floors have been installed, and restoration work on the roof, masonry, and architectural details is being carried out gradually.
