Cheese hut

This well-preserved cheese factory is the only one of its kind in Latvia. It is located within the historic Kalnamuiža estate complex, next to the ruins of the Livonian Order Castle.

  • The ground floor once served as a cellar where milk was stored, while a staircase led to the upper floor, where cheese was cured.
  • The cheese was made from small, flat pieces of cottage cheese mixed with caraway seeds.
  • Openings in the walls of the factory allowed the cheese to cure and air properly.
  • In later years, these openings were bricked up.
  • The cured cheese was sold at markets in Riga.
  • On the roof of the cheese factory, a weather vane bears the inscription ANNO 1763, indicating the year of construction.
