Meditative Forest Walks “IEEJA”

“IEEJA” (ENTRANCE) is about walking and entering. Entering the forest, and walking toward oneself and inner peace. It is about turning inward and meeting oneself, supported by silence deep in the woods. The rhythm of footsteps and breathing, drum sounds, water, gentle swaying in a hammock, gazing at the sky, and warm conversations by the campfire with Chaga tea and a light meal to conclude the experience.

Programme:

  • Silent meditation walk

Participants meet by Lake Niedrājs and, after a brief introduction, head into the forest. Several routes of varying lengths are available – 7 km, 10 km, and 13 km. Some sections overlap with the Smiltene cycling paths, but most follow quiet, secluded trails. The terrain is varied, although no special physical fitness is required. The walk is steady, rhythmic and silent, without unnecessary pauses. Before setting off, participants are asked to hand over their phones and watches for safekeeping or leave them in their cars. Walks take place individually or in small groups.

  • Drum meditation

The walk concludes at a scenic lakeside spot, where participants settle into hammocks and immerse themselves in the sound of drums. Research shows that a fast, steady rhythm of archaic frame drums (approx. 180 beats per minute) can help induce a meditative state within 15 minutes, even for those with no prior meditation experience. This is supported by physical relaxation after the hike, gentle hammock movement, the open sky above, the crackle of a campfire, and the scent of locally made herbal incense.

  • Tea and conversations by the fire

After the drum meditation, participants gather at the table to enjoy a light vegan meal, locally harvested Chaga tea, and to share reflections on their “IEEJA” experience.

  • Cold water swimming

For the more adventurous or those already practising cold water exposure, the experience can be extended with a cold swim in Lake Niedrājs or Lake Spicieris.
